Big inning lifts Mud Dogs past Lynx

Category:

Talk about catching fire at the right time.

The fifth-seeded Fort Frances Mud Dogs used a seven-run fourth inning to roll to a 12-7 win over the sixth-seeded Big Grassy Lynx in a Loser's Side playoff matchup in Rainy River District Women's Fastball League action Monday night at the St. Francis Sports Field.

Trailing 6-4 entering the bottom of the fourth, Christine Jean got things rolling for the Mud Dogs with leadoff single to left field.

That was followed by a Kaily Greengrass single and a Shelby Tymkin walk off Lynx starter Candace Handorgan to load the bases.

A two-run single to left knotted it at 6-6 before a Jodie Hood groundout gave the Mud Dogs their first lead of the night.

Michelle Cain then smacked an infield single to push another run across to push it to 8-6.

After Sarah Glover grounded out, Shiloh Beck hit a bloop single to make it a three-run lead at 9-6, and she moved up to second on bad throw to the infield.

Heather Wright then cashed in another run with a single before Jean reached base again with a hot shot up the middle that Lynx's shortstop couldn't handle. Greengrass then came through with her second hit of the inning, an RBI single to left to make it 11-6 for the Mud Dogs.

Handorgan then struck Tymkin out to end the threat.

After a scoreless first inning, it was the Lynx who got on the board first, plating two runs off Mud Dogs' starter Heather Wright on an error, a pair of walks, and a groundout.

Hood then led off the bottom of the second single to centre for the Mud Dogs before stealing second base.

After a Cain popout, Hood was gunned out trying to steal third.

Glover then drew a walk and moved to third after a double from Beck.

Wright then smacked a single through Big Grassy's shortstops' steps legs to knot it at 2-2.

The Lynx then cashed in three more runs in the top of the third to forge ahead 5-2, which spelled the end of the pitching night for Wright.

Greengrass then led off the bottom of the third with a single before Tymkin grounded out.

Greengrass then scored on an infield single and bad throw to first to cut it to 5-3.

After back-to-back infield singles by Hood and Cain, Glover struck out.

Beck then slapped an infield single to make it a one-run game.

Big Grassy went back up 6-4 in the top of the fourth after reaching on a two-out throwing error to first base and then getting an RBI single down the third-base line.

After the disastrous bottom half, the Lynx had a great chance to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth, but despite getting runners on with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, couldn't capitalize on Hood.

Hood then hit a one-out single to centre in the bottom half before moving up on wild pitch and then advanced to third on ball that got away from the catcher. Cain then poked an RBI single to push it to 12-6 for the Mud Dogs.

Glover then grounded out before Beck struck out to end the threat.

After retiring the side in the top of the sixth, Hood ran into a little trouble in the seventh.

The Lynx came through with a one-out single that the centre-fielder just couldn't get a glove on grab but Hood then induced a fielder's choice.

After a throwing error by Hood to first allowed the runners to advance to second and third, an RBI infield single cut it to 12-7.

But Hood rebounded by inducing an infield popout to end the game and preserve the win.

Handorgan was tagged with the loss for Big Grassy.

MVP honours went to Cain (Mud Dogs) and Handorgan (Lynx).

In Loser's Side matchups elsewhere, Sydney White homered as the second-seeded Red Gut Babes doubled up the eight-seeded Dawson Tigers 14-7.

Shelby Nosan homered and took the loss on the pitching rubber for the Tigers.

Tracy Morningstar picked up the win for the Babes.

MVPs were Sydney White (Babes) and Nosan (Tigers).

And the 10th-seeded Sasbaskong Tebinaak rolled to a 28-11 romp over the ninth-seeded Manitou T-Birdies.

Candi Kelly-Arch nabbed the win while Summer Leonard was tagged with the loss.

MBPS were Kelly-Arch (Tebinaak) and Bev Cochrane (T-Birdies).
