Janice Gagné, left, and her daughter, Anna, dipped their nachos in salsa before the main course Saturday evening during a Mexican-themed dinner at St. John’s Anglican Church here. Nearly a full house was on hand for the special supper, which featured food like frijoles refritos (refried beans), enchilada verdes, calabacitas picadas (a zucchini dish), and capirotada (Mexican bread pudding), as well as lavish decorations, pinatas, and cascarones (painted egg shells filled with confetti). Sept. 16 is celebrated as the date of Mexico’s independence from Spain.
