The Science North “Bluecoats” visited the Fort Frances Public Library last Thursday for a “Make it Move” workshop, which demostrates the science behind gravity, momentum, and biomechanics through hands-on activities. To demonstrate why buildings fall in an earthquake, Bluecoat Dave Bates (not pictured) gave Torsten Bergen and Maddie Buttner a challenge: build a structure that would withstand an earthquake. Each built a structure out of boxes on top of a small “shake table” in a race against each other and the clock. When they were finished, Bates and co-Bluecoat Rachel Mackereth shook the creations with the “shake table” foundations. After a few moments, both buildings fell to the ground and the competition was declared a tie.
