Seven new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by late yesterday afternoon.
Fort Frances Fire #50, located near West Jackfish Lake about 40 km northwest of town, was listed as “being held” at 0.2 hectares in size at last report.
Two of the fires were reported in Kenora District, including one near George Lake, about 20 km northwest of Kenora, that was listed as “not under control” at 0.4 ha in size at last report.
The other fires were located in Red Lake District, Thunder Bay District, and Nipigon District (two).
There currently are 78 active fires in the region, 72 of which are listed as either “under observation," "being held," or "under control.”
Aerial reconnaissance will be flying to monitored fires in the far north to declare inactive fires out.
The fire hazard currently “high" to "extreme” throughout the Kenora, Fort Frances, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout districts.
Thunder Bay District is showing a “high” hazard.
The north shore areas of Nipigon District show a “moderate" hazard, which becomes "high” hazard conditions in the far north.
