MMIWG rock campaign underway

Category:

Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services (FFTAHS) recently held a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls awareness walk that was also aimed at raising awareness for trafficked individuals and violence against women.

Jessica Wilson of FFTAHS said the Fort Frances community and First Nations came together, lit candles for individuals they wanted to pray for, and walked to bring awareness to the MMIWG epidemic.

“This event was definitely one of my favourite I have co-ordinated, so far,” she said.

“Please continue the awareness, become the voice that the lost sisters no longer have, be the voice and never stop fighting for the peace of all.”

Sandra Whalen donated many beautifully hand-painted rocks to FFTAHS for the walk and staff hid them the donated rocks throughout the community for people to find in an effort to raise awareness.

When the rocks are found, individuals are asked to take a picture of the rock and post it to social media with the hashtags #MMIWG, #fortfrancesrocks, and #FFTAHS as well as “like” the Fort Frances Rocks group on Facebook.

Those who find the rocks are then asked to re-hide them in the community for someone else to find.
