Jimmy the Janitor preview

Category:

“Jimmy the Janitor,” a popular Canadian radio character, will be coming back to Fort Frances in October, performing at the Townshend Theatre as a special fundraising event for the 908 Rainy Lake Air Cadets.

“I think it's great humour,” said Patrick Langevin, who is spearheading the event.

“'Jimmy' is well-known all across Canada for being a great one-man show,” he added.

The alter-ego of Maritimer Sandy Gillis, “Jimmy the Janitor” performs across Canada and the U.S.

He regularly appears on such TV stations as CBC, Comedy Central, and CTV, has a nationally-syndicated daily radio show, and also has made 11 comedy albums.

“Jimmy” first appeared on stage in 1987 after Gillis retired from broadcasting after 25 years.

After four years away, he is coming back to the Townshend Theatre.

“We have performed in the Townshend Theatre three or four times and we always have a great crowd there,” noted Gillis.

Most of his shows in the past here have sold out.

“Jimmy is an icon here in Fort Frances," said Langevin. ”He's been here for years and years and years, and I think everybody likes his humour.

“From what I've seen, all the reviews of his show are excellent so I think he's an excellent comedian,” Langevin added.

“I think it's going to be a great success.”

A big selling feature of “Jimmy the Janitor" is his unique comedy and "good, clean fun.”

“It's built to be non-stop funny," said Gillis. ”It's a bit of a riot and 'Jimmy' is a Maritime character [but] you don't have to know anything about the Maritimes to get the comedy.

“And the accent is there but it's not something that prevents you from understanding every word.”

He added those in the Fort Frances area would know “Jimmy” from the radio as local station 93.1 The Border is one of 80 markets across the country the show is played on.

“That's why we have a turnout,” Gillis remarked.

Tickets for the event, now available at Fort Frances General Supply here and Cloverleaf in Emo, cost $25.

The show will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Townshend Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:30).

It will feature two 40-minute comedy sets with an intermission.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards an educational trip for the local air cadet squadron.
