Help send district kids back to school with a backpack full of supplies.
The annual “Backpacks for Kids” campaign is underway, with the public invited to drop off supplies, backpacks, or cash donations at M. Wu Dentistry on 1201 Colonization Rd. W.
Alternatively, they can call Dr. Wu's office at 274-5365 and ask for Heather Calder or Kathy Lampi to arrange for pick-up.
Calder and Lampi, who both work at M. Wu Dentistry, have taken over the backpack drive from campaign originator Tammy Ouelett.
Calder said Ouelett had “gone above and beyond” in the last four years.
“She managed to collect 110 filled backpacks last year, which were distributed between Family and Children Services and Weech-it-te-win Family Services,” she added.
“This year—year five—Kathy and I are hoping to top that for this milestone mark,” noted Calder, adding she and Lampi are privileged to have M. Wu Dentistry help them out by allowing them to use their work time and the dental office as a drop-off location.
All school supplies are appreciated.
Pencils, pens, paper, pencil cases, erasers, colouring supplies, calculators, glue sticks, and pencil sharpeners all are ideal items to donate.
Businesses are encouraged to have their employees team up and fill a backpack.
A school supply donation bin and cash donation boxes also will be set up at The Bargain Shop here for people to donate whatever they can.
There also will be a “Stuff-A-Bus” drive at Walmart on Aug. 12 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This is being co-ordinated by Camie Gray of Iron Range Bus Lines.
The deadline to donate items is Aug. 19, with backpacks to be distributed to Children and Family Services and Weech-it-te-win the following week.
“Let's make this the best year yet,” enthused Calder.
