Fire scene slows

Category:

Lower temperatures and precipitation have had a cooling effect on the regional forest fire situation.

There currently are 93 active fires in the region, 63 of which are listed as “under observation," nine as "under control," and seven as "being held.”

The other 14 are listed as “not under control.”

The fire hazard currently is “high” in Kenora District and the western portion of Fort Frances District.

The hazard ranges from “moderate" to "low” in the Dryden, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout districts.

Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts currently are under a “low” fire hazard.

Just one new fire was confirmed by the yesterday afternoon in the Northwest Region.

Sioux Lookout Fire #103 was located near the Bow River, about 190 km northeast of Sioux Lookout.

The blaze has been declared “out” at 0.1 hectares.

Meanwhile, roughly 125 FireRangers remain engaged with Kenora Fire #71, located about 80 km north of Kenora in the Umfreville Lake area.

The 10,265-ha blaze saw scattered thunderstorms through the area on Tuesday while sections of the fire received only one mm of rain.

Officials are on the lookout for new fire starts in the area as a result of the lightning.
