The Northwest Catholic District School Board will update members on the process made on selecting a name for its new consolidated school at their regular meeting tonight.
The School Naming Committee held its first meeting in February, where it was decided that the staff and students of both St. Michael's and St. Francis school would be allowed to submit their ideas as part of a contest.
The committee then drew up posters for each school, as well as a submission form.
The submission form has a number of criteria that the new name should adhere to. It may have the name “Our Lord" or "Our Lady," be named after a saint, Catholic tradition, or an "exemplary Catholic person of local, national, international or historic significance.”
Other requirements listed on the form are:
- The school name should reflect the Catholic faith
- The name should provide encouragement and inspiration not only to staff and students, but also to the wider Christian community
- The name should be one that students and staff can relate to
The form states that the name can't be shared with another school in the district, such as Our Lady of the Way (Stratton) or St. Patrick's (Atikokan).
The contest will also be opened to the public, with a closing date of April 26. The naming committee will then present up to three names to the board trustees for final selection at the May board meeting.
The K-8 consolidated school is scheduled to be open for the 2019-2020 school year.
Also on the agenda for tonight's board meeting is a presentation on Positive Behaviour Supports from behaviour lead Tara Johnson, along with the Recognition of Excellence, which will be awarded to Kali Santerre, Mike Esposito and Geraldine Morgan of Sacred Heart School in Sioux Lookout for their work in forming a youth choir.
The board will also receive reports from advisory committees, as well as updates on the 2019-2020 budget and kindergarten registration.
Tonight's board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held via videoconference at the board office here.
