BDO food drive gives boost to soup kitchen

Category:

BDO had another successful year promoting its “Drive Away Hunger” campaign.

We were able to raise a total of what worked out to be 9,621 meals.

The Fort Frances office placed 10th for donations collected out of 106 offices across Canada that participated.

We reached out to the community this year by sending out flyers and spending two days collecting food at Cloverleaf in Emo and Walmart in Fort Frances.

Within the office, we donated all the profits from our canteen and held other events within the office to raise funds.

The lovely ladies who run the Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen at the New Beginnings Fellowship Church were overjoyed to receive their portion of the donations, which came in at $1,467 in cash and 585 pounds of non-perishables.

Charlene, who runs the Emo Food Bank, was equally happy to receive $1,350 in cash and 600 pounds of non-perishables.

The amazing women of the Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen—Brenda Dolph, Joy Lockman, Helen Preston, Mary Tank, and Susan Wieler—prepare hot, homemade dishes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to about 25 people.

There's been less lately with the overpass construction but especially now knowing how many homeless individuals we have in our community, they would like to see more of those people coming in to utilize the program.

Lockman stated they have a van that seats six passengers they would like to use to pick people up downtown, but they can't afford the insurance on the vehicle and they also would need volunteers to drive.

If anyone would like more information or would like to donate, they can call Lockman at 276-6746.

BDO would like to send a huge thank you to all of the generous people who donated to this very worthy cause, and we look forward to working with these organizations again next year!
