‘Support Services’ to be recognized

The School Support Services Department of the Rainy River District School Board will receive the “Recognition of Excellence” tonight at the board’s regular meeting for supporting system goals.

“The School Support Services Department provides instructional leadership, and supports all schools in the areas of Special Education, E-learning, Student Success, literacy, numeracy, Aboriginal Education, Reading Recovery, speech/language, mental health, Applied Behavior Analysis, attendance and technology,” explained a report to the board, adding the staff within the department works collaboratively to support students and teachers in all schools throughout the district.

Department staff not only facilitate professional development for teachers and educational assistants specific to their individual needs, but they also helps to provide additional support for community training sessions, parent nights and the most recent math and science nights, the district science fair, school and system speech contests, and New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) training.

“The School Support Services Department provides instructional leadership to educational staff across the district with the over all objective of enhancing system capacity,” the report concludes.” As system capacity is enhanced, increases in student achievement, well-being, and engagement will result.”

Also at tonight’s meeting, the board will:

  • hear about Special Education supports;
  • hear updates from various committees;
  • hear from direction Heather Campbell regarding the annual operation plan for 2015-16;
  • look to approve a bylaw granting authority to borrow up to a maximum indebtedness at any one time of $4,000,000 on the authorized signing officers of the Board to meet current operating costs for 2015-2016 pending the receipt of grants and/or funds from local revenue;
  • hear a report on Supervised Alternative Learning; and
  • hear an update on summer facility and IT projects.

The meeting gets underway at the Education Centre at 7 p.m.
