As a parent of a recently-graduated Fort High Grade 12 student, I wanted to stop and say thanks to all those who made the 2017 “Chem-Free Grad” one of the best yet.
Almost 100 grads had a great post-graduation party from 10 p.m.-4 a.m.(!) filled with yummy food, great games, and fabulous prizes.
This would not have been possible without the tireless work of many parents, and the financial support from so many businesses and individuals. Well over $20,000 was raised from right across Rainy River District, with 100s of large and small businesses and individuals donating cash and prizes.
A dedicated group of parents met regularly since March to make sure the event was well-planned and well-run. Then on the night of the event, this committee was joined by many more volunteer parents (and a few policemen—thanks!) to make sure the kids stayed safe and the evening flowed smoothly.
Over the course of the night and into the wee hours of the morning, I had the chance to see these young people be amazed by talented magician Chris Funk, demonstrate their musical knowledge with Adrian Chapman's “Name that Tune" game, laugh at their friends doing crazy "Minute to Win It" games (shaving cream and Cheezies anyone?!), cheer on their friends on the "Meltdown" (an inflatable obstacle course), and speed through relays and the "Survivor” food challenge.
And throughout all this, they were making one last great memory with friends who had been a big part of their lives for the last four years.
Definitely a special evening and I was thankful to be a part of it.
And none of it would have been possible without the tireless work of the legendary Brian Gustafson, who has served the school, the parents, the students, and the community by organizing this event for the last 14 years!
It was a great night, and with another son graduating in the two years, I will get to be a part of it all over again in 2019!
