GEMS hold achievement night

The Calvinette GEMS’ held their achievement evening Tuesday at the Emo Christian Reformed Church.

With pianist Cora Van Smeerdyk at the keyboard, the procession commenced. The girls, carrying colourful balloons, marched to their seats, each dressed in white/blue apparel with blue kerchiefs containing achievement badges they have earned during their years as club members.

Catholic board cuts five teachers

The Northwest Catholic District School Board has announced the first round of casualties from the ministry’s new funding model, declaring 4.75 teaching positions as surplus.

The decision was made at Saturday’s regular board meeting in Dryden, during which the 1998-99 preliminary budget, which predicted a $117,000 shortfall, was presented to trustees.

KBHW to hold charity auction

KBHW Radio in International Falls will hold a charity auction at the Bob Walls Memorial Union Hall there to raise support specifically for the physical needs of its building and radio maintenance.

“The facility has served us extremely well in the 15 years of our existence,” noted station manager Bruce Christopherson, but added it is beginning to show its age.

Seeding season comes early

Kim Jo Calder, manager of the Emo Research Station, has taken every advantage of the early spring, with many of the cereal crops for her performance trials already in the ground there.

Calder started seeding the middle of last week although she said the ground was worked up and ready by Monday.

Devlin TOPS hold mini rally

The annual TOPS mini rally was held March 30 at Crossroads School.

The room was decorated with a spring-like theme, as some members had seen to it to ensure the decorating suited this special occasion.

This event was well attended by guests along with the roughly 30 active members of the group.
