On Sunday around 11:15 a.m., a late-model pick-up truck was travelling northbound on Highway 105 went it left the roadway and collided with two boulders and a tree.
The truck's fuel tank ruptured and caught fire.
A civilian witness came upon the scene and located two occupants in the truck, but was unable to get them out due to the heavy damage the vehicle sustained and returned to his vehicle to call 9-1-1.
Meanwhile, officers from the Red Lake/Ear Falls OPP were on patrol when they observed a large plume of smoke just south of the intersection of Highway 105 and 125.
They observed the vehicle to be engulfed in flames and, with the assistance of the civilian, tried to assist the two occupants out of the vehicle.
They were successful in removing the passenger, who was transported to the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital but pronounced dead a while later.
Both occupants of the vehicle died.
Their identities will be released once next-of-kin notification is complete.
