Tobacco bust leads to charges

A man has been charged for trafficking unmarked cigarettes.

Last Friday around 2 p.m., members of the Kenora OPP conducted a traffic stop on Highway 17 near Moth Lake.

When dealing with the driver of the vehicle, police determined he was transporting a quantity of unmarked cigarettes.

A search of the vehicle located just under 80,000 cigarettes and a small amount of marijuana.

The tobacco’s estimated street value is nearly $24,000.

The driver, a 54-year-old male of Papineau-Cameron Township, Ont., was charged with trafficking in contraband tobacco and possession of a Schedule II substance.

Further charges under the Tobacco Taxes Act and the Excise Act are pending.

He is to appear in court Dec. 3 in Kenora.
