The centre-piece of Rainy River's Winter Festival will be the Rick Bourre Memorial Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020.
Rick Bourre, a long time resident of Rainy, was an extremely dedicated volunteer. Particularly at the arena and curling rinks, where his mechanical genius kept the ice plants and equipment ticking. Rick was tragically lost in a traffic accident last year. He is honoured and greatly missed by the whole community.
Registration for the Rick Bourre Ice Fishing Derby will take place at the Hannam Park Dock at the bottom of 4th Street from 9 to 10 a.m. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone who signs up for Early Bird Registration before 4:00 p.m., Feb. 14, at the Rainy River Town office will be entered for a special prize draw.
“We will have cash prizes for the four top weights in each of the Walleye, Northern, and a special Kids Category,” explained Recreational Director Danielle Smith. The Cash Payout will be 50 per cent of the total entries.
Entrance fees are; Adult $20; 18 and under $10; Family of three or more $50. Holes will be pre-drilled and you can purchase an extra hole for $10.
As well as fishing there will be a canteen. . . hot dogs and hot chocolate perhaps? And skating for kids. Winter fun for all ages. Come out and enjoy.
Smith, originally from Manigotagan, Mb moved here with her husband and two children in October 2018, and accepted the position as Rainy River Director of Recreation in October of 2019. Her lively and sparkling personality is a very positive asset on Rainy's Recreation scene.
