No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by late yesterday afternoon.
There currently are 36 active fires in the region, 34 of which are listed as either “under observation," "being held," or "under control.”
Recent rainfall in the far north is helping FireRanger crews in their efforts on Red Lake Fire #38 near North Spirit Lake, which is 28,217 hectares in size, and Sioux Lookout Fire #37 near Sachigo Lake (200 hectares).
Both of these fires were listed as “not under control” at last report.
West of the community of Pikangikum, meanwhile, FireRangers are holding the 156-hectare Red Lake Fire #60, which started on June 28.
In related news, crews from the northwest are being deployed to assist the Northeast Region, which saw more than a dozen new fire starts yesterday as the forest fire hazard escalates in that part of the province.
The forest fire hazard in this region is predominantly “low," with a band of "moderate” hazard running through the Kenora, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout districts.
