Rain dampens fire hazard

Category:

No new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.

But there were four confirmed fires by day’s end Saturday, including Fort Frances Fire #8.

Located near Eva Lake, about 30 km east of Atikokan, it was declared “out” at 0.1 hectares in size.

Meanwhile, Nipigon Fire #21 was declared “out” at seven hectares in size.

This blaze, located about 30 km northwest of Nakina, started June 17 and required air attack and four FireRanger crews in its initial stages.

Current active fires include Red Lake Fire #3, located in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, which was listed as “being observed” at last report at 74,334 ha in size.

Sioux Lookout Fire #14, a lightning-caused fire in a remote located in the far north, also is “being observed.”

Its current size is 12 ha.

But Sioux Lookout Fire #13 remains listed as “not under control” at 22 ha in size.

Located about 25 km northwest of Cat Lake, this lightning-caused blaze has three FireRanger crews committed to it, working from south to north.

The north side of the fire is limited by a lake.

The forest fire hazard currently is “low” across the region due to heavy rainfall over the weekend.
