Marine patrol lays charges

Category:

On April 25 and 26, members of the Rainy River District OPP, along with a conservation officer from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, conducted a marine patrol on the Rainy River.

Officers made about 80 contacts along the border.

Some 16 vessel inspections were conducted, which resulted in eight charges being laid under the Small Vessel Regulations of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001.

Warnings also were issued under provincial legislation such as the Liquor Licence Act and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

Residents are reminded to ensure they have the appropriate safety equipment required under legislation on Canada's waterways.

Lifejackets or PFDs, and other safety equipment, must be “readily accessible and available for immediate use.”

It is the best practice to wear a lifejacket or PFD, especially with the cold water temperatures with this year's late spring thaw.
