A man has been charged in the death of a Sandy Lake First Nation resident.
At approximately 1:44 a.m. on May 6, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service responded to a call regarding a male in need of assistance outside a residence on River Road in Sandy Lake.
Police responded and located a male in the ditch. He was transported by police to the Sandy Lake Nursing Station and was subsequently pronounced dead.
The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Wilfred Fiddler from Sandy Lake First Nation.
A post mortem examination took place in Kenora on May 8.
The cause of death is not being released at this time.
Kory Fiddler, a 24-year-old male from Sandy Lake First Nation was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code.
On Friday, the accused was re-arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to section 235 of the Criminal Code.
He is currently being held in custody in Kenora for an arraignment this date.
North West Region OPP Crime Unit members and Nishnawbe-Aski Police, under the direction of Detective Staff Sergeant Paul ROSATO of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), are continuing their investigation.
