Legion ladies meet

Category:

The Fort Frances Legion Ladies' Auxiliary met on March 8, with 27 members in attendance.

It was with a heavy heart that auxiliary president Alfreda Easton told the members about the loss of Carol Affleck and her husband, Lovern.

Carol joined the auxiliary as soon as she arrived in Fort Frances from B.C. In a very short time, she became a valuable member, and friend to all, while volunteering in any way she could.

At Christmas, Carol was honoured to receive an award from the local Legion Br. #29 for her willingness to undertake any job that needed to be done.

She always brought such fun to any event she was helping with.

Carol will be greatly missed by all of the auxiliary, her family, and friends.

Meanwhile, the charter was draped in memory of Johan Supinski-Lockman, who had 35 years of service and was a very active member in her earlier years.

Her infectious smile will be missed by all of the auxiliary and her family.

Committee reports were read and dealt with.

Donations were approved for “Project Petunia," the Rainy River District Festival of the Performing Arts, and the FFHS "Chem-Free Grad” committee.

A dozen auxiliary members will be attending the district meeting being held in Red Lake on March 24-26.

Next year, the district meeting will be held here in April, with planning already underway for this event.

Christina McDougall gave a report on the “Pre-Grammy Gala” that was held Feb. 11.

This was a very successful event thanks to the community, businesses, and members who supported it in every way. Some $12,000 was raised, which is enough to replace the chairs in the hall.

Thanks again to the hard-working committee that toiled tirelessly for a year on making this happen.

The “Canada 150” tulips will be showing their faces soon (spring is coming), so watch for these in the Legion front flower beds.

A reminder the auxiliary's next monthly supper will be held on Friday, March 31 starting at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 4:30).

It will feature turkey, dressing, gravy, salad, buns, potatoes, vegetables, and home-baked pies—all for just $15/plate.

A 50/50 draw also will be made that evening.

Come out and enjoy. Take-outs also are available for pick-up by calling 274-3772.

The attendance draw was won by Danette Allan, the birthday draw winner was Maria Slusarchuk, and Susan Neurinski won the 50/50 draw.

The auxiliary's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Legion hall.
