Legion ladies' auxiliary elects officers for 2019

The local Legion Ladies' Auxiliary met on Nov. 14, with 32 members in attendance.

The charter was draped in memory of Gloria Bergner.

An election of officers for 2019 was held, with Alfreda Easton to be president, Leslie as first vice, Christina McDougall as second vice, and Josie Miller as treasurer.

Rounding out the executive is Joanne Gosselin (past president), Sandra Pruys/Janes Hayes (Sergeant at Arms), Joanne Gosselin/Cindy Noble (Membership), Diane Taggart (Sick & Visiting), Clara Stainke/Marlene Rissman (Entertainment), and Giselle Calder/Barb Everett (Publicity).

Ways & Means and Social remain vacant, with a secretary to be appointed.

Note we have a couple of vacancies that need to be filled so please consider stepping forward.

Under new business, the need was recognized to accommodate those who do not subscribe to, or do not have access to, Shaw Cable in order to take part in the weekly Lions' TV bingo each Thursday evening.

The local Lions Club approached the auxiliary and we have come on board to open the Legion Hall upstairs on Thursday evenings for Bingo players to come to play.

Cards will be available there prior to the start of Bingo, which gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

All are welcome to take part and support the local Lions Club.

Our first night was last Thursday (Nov. 15), with 14 people taking part.

The next Bingo night is Thursday, Nov. 22.

A reminder the auxiliary's next monthly supper—featuring a turkey dinner with all the fixings—will be held Friday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. upstairs at the Legion (doors open at 4:30).

The cost is $16/plate, with take-outs available for pick-up by calling 274-3772 before 4:30 p.m.

In other news, the annual Remembrance Day Tea held on Sunday, Nov. 4 again was a great success.

Thank you to all who attended and everyone who donated their time and goods.

The 50/50 draw winner was Sheldon Thompson ($2,000).

Meanwhile, the draw for the queen-sized quilt held on Nov. 11 was won by Bernadette Duke.

A big thank you to Wilna Meyers for the donation of the beautiful quilt.

The Legion Ladies' Auxiliary “Colour Party” attended J.W. Walker and Robert Moore on Nov. 9, the Fort Frances Lakers' game on Nov. 10, and the local cenotaph on Nov. 11 for Remembrance Day services.

Meals on Wheels dates for spring have been set for March and April.

The auxiliary also is making a donation to the local Salvation Army and a donation of non-perishable goods to the UNFC food bank.

Preparations also continue for the Legion convention to be held June 14-17 in Fort Frances.

The November birthday draw winner was Lisa Gushulak while Marlene Rissman won the 50/50 draw and Diane Taggart the attendance draw.

The winner of the early-bird membership for 2019 was Sandra Gosselin.

The auxiliary's next meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 12 will be the annual Christmas dinner meeting.

The meeting is at 6 p.m., with dinner being served at 7 (please bring along a non-perishable food item for the UNFC food bank).

A gift exchange also will be held, with gift pricing set at $15 this year.
