In 1965, the idea to assist students entering the Faculty of Physical Education was presented by the Ladies' Auxiliaries of District 4 of the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion at the Biennial Convention.
This award continued until 1985, when the award was changed to The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary University Scholarship for the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Command.
Students entering the faculties of Bachelor of Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy were eligible to apply.
During the last 32 years, 408 students have received scholarships totalling $354,750.
Students must have resided originally in Manitoba or Northwestern Ontario, but they may attend any Canadian university offering the eligible faculties.
At this point in time, the program eligibility has changed to include the Masters Occupational Therapy faculty and Pyschiatric Nursing.
Revenue for the scholarships is raised by the 2,300 members of the 70 Ladies Auxiliaries to the RCL in our Command and in memoriam donations made to this fund.
In addition to supporting this project, many of the auxiliaries also offer scholarships and bursaries to students in their respective communities.
It is important that the youth of today are assisted in their education to become the professionals needed in the future.
Of the 29 applicants received for the 2017 scholarship, 12 awards in the amount of $750 each were presented to the following:
- Masters of Occupational Therapy—Naomi Hatherly, Anghela Sivananthan, Jaclyn Bell, and Meagan Sparrow;
- Masters of Physiotherapy—Leah Turman, Carley R. Wiebe, Erin Sarahs, Brett Willow, and Shaylas Cosgrove; and
- Bachelor of Nursing—Brendan Chassi, Tanasha Wray, and Draven Isabella Teuws
