'Girls Empowerment Day' planned

Category:

Being a teen can be difficult and facing the challenges associated with growing up is isolating for some.

To help girls aged 13-18 build confidence and self-esteem, a “Girls Empowerment Day” is slated for Saturday, March 23 from noon-4 p.m. upstairs at the Northern Career Development Services (NCDS) building on Scott Street.

“We're going to start off with some motivational speakers,” noted event organizer Lyz Klem.

“I have some girls that I grew up with coming to talk about body image, mental health and well-being, and finding your passion,” she noted.

“I'm going to share my own story, as well.”

Through the event, Klem is hoping attendees will build self-confidence and know nobody is perfect, everybody has flaws, and that they are not alone in what they're going through.

“I'm hoping that by sharing my own story, they will realize that there's other people out there that go through the same things as them,” she explained.

“Hopefully, they'll feel stronger in their own skin just knowing that they're not alone.”

Following the motivational speakers, Klem said the participants will play self-esteem building games and then finish off with a free photo shoot, where they get to take home a “confidence-boosting picture.”

She attended the “I am Awesome (And I know it)” retreat for young women when she was in her teens and said it inspired her to make a one-day version of the weekend-long event.

“I know when I was that age, I didn't feel that I was powerful and . . . looking back, if I would have had somebody doing what I'm doing now for me, that would have been very empowering and boosted my self-confidence, for sure,” Klem remarked.

The event is meant to provide a friendly, welcoming, non-judgemental space for teenaged girls to connect with one another.

There's space for a maximum of 30 girls to sign up and Klem is hoping to fill all the spots

Those interested in attending the event, or finding out more details, can contact Klem at 276-6063.

“It's going to be a lot of fun and just a really positive day," she enthused. ”There's not going to be any negativity or stress or anything to worry about.

“It's just a day to forget about everything, let go, and feel strong in your own skin.”
