Two new fires were confirmed between Oct. 1-4 in the Northwest Region.
Kenora Fire #52, located near Whitney Lake, is now “out” at 0.1 hectares in size.
Thunder Bay Fire #49, located near Nelson Lake, also is “out” at 0.1 hectares.
Meanwhile, two new fires were confirmed by yesterday afternoon.
Fort Frances Fire #22, located at Couchiching First Nation, is “out” at 0.1 hectares.
Sioux Lookout Fire #73, located near Searson Bay on Lake St. Joseph, was “being observed” at 0.2 hectares in size at last report.
The forest fire hazard is “moderate-high” across the region.
In related news, the Basket Lake Ragged Wood prescribed burn is complete and will be monitored by fire management headquarters staff over the next few days.
The entire project area of 3297.6 hectares was ignited between Sept. 29 and Oct. 2.
The goals of this prescribed burn were to remove residual slash piles, create more planting sites for trees, and reduce the forest fire hazard in the Sioux Lookout and Dryden districts.
The ignition operations were contained to the slash piles and no problems occurred during the project.
