Fire scene heating up in region

Category:

Eight new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon, with more reports being investigated at the time of this update.

Located in the Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay districts, these fires range in size from 0.1 to 12 hectares.

Several of the smaller fires have been declared “out.”

The forest fire hazard is “high" to "extreme” across the Northwest Region.

As such, if you're performing yard clean-up, consider chipping or composting brush or grass before burning.

If you must burn, make sure you know the rules and follow Ontario's outdoor burning regulations to ensure you burn grass and woody debris safely.

If you're planning to perform any outdoor burning, make sure you have tools and water on hand to put your fire out—and never leave it unattended.

Fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.

Residents of municipalities also should check any local bylaws that may be in effect prior to burning.
