Fire hazard on the rise

Despite an escalating forest fire hazard in the Northwest Region, no new fires were reported by yesterday afternoon.

A late fire start on the evening of June 18 was found near the far north community of Webequie.

Nipigon Fire #12, which escaped a trench at the community's dump site, was listed as “being held” at 0.1 hectares in size at last report.

The forest fire hazard ranges from “extreme" to "high” in the Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Kenora, and Dryden Districts, as well as the western portion of the Fort Frances District.

Conditions from the Quetico region moving west to Thunder Bay and the north shore range from “low" to "moderate" hazard, with "high” hazards prevailing as one moves north.

There currently are 14 active fires in the region, 13 of which are either “under observation," "under control," or "being held.”

To report a forest fire, call 310-FIRE (3473).
