The Chapple, Emo, La Vallee and Alberton Fire & Emergency Service is warning district residents of a scam in which individuals are impersonating local fire and emergency services to solicit donations.
Last Thursday, the fire service was notified by local residents saying they were contacted by fraudsters posing as local fire departments and asking for donations.
Local fire and emergency services do not solicit donations for charities online or by phone.
The only things they sell are the Rainy River District cash calendars for the mutual aid association and for local charity or fundraising events.
These fundraisers are done in person only and by local firefighters from that community.
The fire service never raises funds by phone.
Police advise that if you receive such a call, hang up immediately and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
You also can Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or your local OPP detachment.
