Rainy River was filled with smoke yesterday morning due to a fire at the local restaurant known as “The Roadside.”
“Fire broke out about 0850,” said Ashley Dufresne-Stamler, deputy chief of the Rainy River Fire Department.
“We got there close to 9 [a.m.],” she added.
Local residents quickly spotted the smoke and gathered near the site to watch with sadness as the local business was burning.
“The fire started in the middle of the building which was used for storage” noted Dufresne-Stamler.
Rainy River firefighters began the battle against the fire, then were joined about 30 minutes later by members of the Dawson Fire Department.
It was a joint effort from the two communities, and they were able to get everything contained in about three hours, according to the crew battling the blaze.
“Looked like it was an electrical fire which started at an outlet where a freezer was plugged in,” said Dufresne-Stamler.
No injuries were reported and damage estimates were not known as of press time.
The area has been taped off for public safety.
