Fire crews heading west

Category:

Three new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by mid-afternoon yesterday.

Kenora Fire #145 was located south of Greenwater Lake, near the CP Rail line about 27 km west of Kenora.

The 0.2-hectare blaze was listed as “not under control” at last report.

The other two fires were located in Thunder Bay District.

There currently are 37 active fires in the region, including two that were listed as “not under control.”

Four were listed as “under control," three were "being held," and the other 28 were "under observation.”

The fire hazard ranges from “low" and "moderate” in most parts of the region.

But pockets of “high” hazard conditions exist in the Fort Frances, Kenora, and Dryden districts, as well as the northern portions of the Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts.

In related news, 88 personnel headed to British Columbia yesterday to join the effort in what is now that province's worst fire season on record.

This latest contingent, including four 21-person firefighting crews and four overhead staff, will join 110 Ontario staffers already working in B.C.

The next few days also will see more than 30 Ontario staff return home from B.C.
