The Kenora OPP is issuing a reminder to all citizens that any act of mischief committed in relation to election signs is a criminal offence.
The OPP would like to remind the public that it is an offence to remove or damage official election signs.
People found damaging or removing signs can face charges under the Criminal Code. Further, according the Canada Elections Act, “No person shall prevent or impair the transmission to the public of an election advertising message without the consent of a person with authority to authorize its transmission.”
The Kenora OPP have received reports of signs being stolen, vandalized and tampered within the City of Kenora.
In most cases these signs are posted on private property.
Any person entering onto private property, without colour of right, in order to attempt to commit an illegal act in relation to election signs is also guilty of trespassing.
Those persons found committing such offences will be charged accordingly.
