District projects receive funding

Local MP Don Rusnak, Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro, and Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs announced Friday that new projects in Fort Frances, La Vallee, and Lac La Croix First Nation have been approved under the federal government's Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF).

Fort Frances will receive $148,424 in federal dollars to help fund the reconstruction of Nelson Street from Mosher Avenue to 90 metres west.

La Vallee will receive $21,606 to improve ditching and stormwater management infrastructure, and $18,854 to improve erosion-prevention infrastructure.

Lac La Croix First Nation, meanwhile, will receive $59,839 for sewage lagoon reinforcement.

In addition to these three projects, $726,000 in federal funding for other water and wastewater projects will benefit eight other Ontario communities.

The provincial government will provide $487,000 in funding for these 12 projects across Ontario.

This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the CWWF.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that strategic investments in 'green' infrastructure create safe, vibrant, and sustainable communities,” Rushak said on behalf of federal Infrastructure and Communities minister Amarjeet Sohi.

“Projects like the one announced today [Friday] in Thunder Bay are critical to helping protect residents and businesses against flooding,” he noted.
