On Jan. 31, the Pikangikum Police Service requested the assistance of the OPP with a sudden death investigation in the community of Pikangikum First Nation.
Earlier that day, Pikangikum Police Service officers had been contacted regarding an infant male who had been brought into the nursing station and subsequently was pronounced dead.
The male has been identified as two-month-old Neil Neegan Andi Keeper of Pikangikum First Nation.
Officers with the Pikangikum Police Service and the OPP's North West Region Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Unit, under the direction of Det. Insp. Randy Heida of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto on Feb. 2.
