Boards in need of applicants

A new town council is preparing to be sworn-in next month but they won't be the only fresh faces seen around local municipal meeting tables in the coming term.

The town is accepting applications from qualified residents to serve on various boards and committees until Nov. 21 and from the looks of it, quite a few applicants are needed to fill those positions.

“As with any community, it takes a large volunteer base in order to get a lot of the activities and ensure the quality of life we all expect here in Fort Frances,” town clerk Lisa Slomke told the Times.

“But in order to get that, we need people to come out and volunteer on these boards,” she stressed.

Slomke noted the boards and committees (listed below) reflect a range of interests. On top of that, the town is looking for a variety of perspectives on these bodies.

“We are looking for people from all walks of life—working people and not-working people, retired people, young people, old people,” she remarked.

"We want everything.

“We want as much diversity as we can get on these committees. That's what's going to make them good,” Slomke added.

The only criteria to apply to a town board or committee is to be an eligible elector (i.e., age 18 and older and a Canadian resident of Fort Frances).

“At this point, we want as many people as possible to apply,” Slomke said.

“If they feel they have something they can contribute to these committees and board, we want to hear from you.”

Slomke urged those interested to try out the new online application process.

If you would rather get a paper copy of the application form, they can be picked up at the front desk at the Civic Centre.

As mentioned above, there's dozens of board and committee vacancies to fill.

The Traffic Safety Committee, which fall under the Operations and Facilities division, has one vacancy.

Under the Community Services division, the Fort Frances Public Library Board has five vacancies, Kiwanis Sunny Cove Camp Advisory Committee has two, the Museum & Cultural Centre Advisory Committee has five, Sister Betty Kennedy Centre Board of Management also has five, and the Theatre Management Advisory Committee has one.

Under the Planning and Development division, the Business Improvement Area (BIA) Board of Management has 11 vacancies to fill (these must be land owners or tenants within the downtown BIA area), the Committee of Adjustment has seven, and the Fort Frances Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation has five.

Committees of council, and the number of vacancies to fill on them, include the Citizen of the Year Committee (three), the Economic Development Advisory Committee (nine), and the Fort Frances Police Services Board (one).

Most of the term limits are aligned with that of council (i.e., four years).

The deadline for submissions is 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Applications received will be referred to the respective executive committees or the committee of the whole for recommendation to council.

The new council will make the appointments at its Dec. 10 meeting.
