The local Alzheimer Society’s “First Link” program provides support for individuals recently diagnosed with a dementia, and a free three-week series will be held here starting Nov. 17.
“Next Steps for Families & Friends” will offer family members caring for individuals with dementia an overview of dementia, coping strategies, and resources available.
This series also will offer participants an opportunity to share and connect with others embarking on a similar journey.
The series will run Nov. 17, Nov. 24, and Dec. 1 from 1-3 p.m. at the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau (old CN station).
Topics will include:
•memory loss, changes to the brain, and resulting behaviours;
•coping strategies;
•drugs, treatment, and research;
•future planning (legal and financial matters); and
•community resources and support systems.

The Alzheimer Society of Kenora/Rainy River Districts offers the “First Link” learning series that provides participants with dialogue and education to learn about the different stages of the disease progression, coping strategies, resources, and support.
Each series builds upon the other to provide participants with progressive education.
