Speller’s journey shows how tough national bee has become

OXON HILL, Md. — Shaheer Imam never thought it would take so long to get back to the National Spelling Bee.

The 13-year-old from Catonsville, Maryland, made his first appearance during Barack Obama’s first term as president. Shaheer was just eight years old, and he spelled “capricious” and “quinzaine” correctly on stage.

Birkin bag sells for record $380,000 at Hong Kong auction

HONG KONG — Christie’s says a luxury handbag has shattered the world auction record in Hong Kong.

The auction house didn’t identify the buyer of the matte white crocodile skin Hermes Birkin bag with 18 karat gold and diamond hardware at Wednesday’s sale.

It fetched 2.94 million Hong Kong dollars ($380,000), which Christie’s says is a record for any handbag sold at auction.

Bear trying to get doughnuts tears off Colorado car bumper

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A bear with a sweet tooth ripped off the bumper of a car used to deliver doughnuts in Colorado then tried to claw its way through the trunk to get inside.

Moose Watch Cafe owner Kim Robertson said she and her husband discovered the bumper-less car after they awoke Monday in Steamboat Springs.

Don’t call me Caitlyn: Baby name plunges in popularity

WASHINGTON — Don’t call me Caitlyn.

A year after Caitlyn Jenner announced her new name and gender, the popularity of the name Caitlyn plummeted more than any other baby name, according to Social Security’s annual list of the most popular baby names.

In fact, the four names that dropped the most were all variations of the same name: Caitlin, Caitlyn, Katelynn and Kaitlynn.

Toy given to police officer as safety talisman gets to Ohio

CINCINNATI — Police in Ohio have received a stuffed toy given by a child to a Pennsylvania police officer to help keep him safe.

The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/2owU8hU ) reports a stuffed moose called Mr. Moosey has become a travelling protection talisman sent to police and other first responder agencies around the country.
