Polaris plans to drop unprofitable Victory Motorcycle brand

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Polaris Industries will stop making its Victory motorcycles so it can focus on its Indian Motorcycle brand and other products.

Polaris announced Monday that it is shutting down the unprofitable Victory brand after 18 years. The motorcycles were produced at the Minneapolis-based company’s Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Spearfish, South Dakota, plants.

Chevy Bolt gets top car award; Honda Ridgeline top truck

DETROIT — The Chevy Bolt has been named top car in North America, an important milestone for a car General Motors hopes will finally get Americans hooked on electric vehicles.

The Honda Ridgeline grabbed the honour for top truck. Utility vehicles were honoured separately for the first time, with the Pacifica minivan from Fiat Chrysler snagging that award.

Insurer: 2016 saw highest natural disaster losses in 4 years

BERLIN — Last year saw the highest costs from natural disasters since 2012, with a pair of earthquakes in Japan in April accounting for the heaviest losses, a leading insurer said Wednesday.

Losses from natural disasters worldwide totalled $175 billion last year, some $50 billion of which was covered by insurance, Munich Re said in an annual survey .

Snickers maker criticizes industry-funded paper on sugar

NEW YORK — Mars Inc., the maker of Skittles and M&M’s, is breaking ranks with other food companies and denouncing an industry-funded paper that says global recommendations on limiting sugar are based on weak evidence.

The paper drew criticism this week because it was paid for by a group whose members include Coca-Cola, Hershey, Red Bull and Oreo cookie maker Mondelez.
