New fires reported on weekend

Category:

Four new fires were reported in the Northwest Region yesterday.

Three were in the Dryden District while the other one was in the Nipigon District.

One of the new fires was declared “out” by early evening.

Two other fires in Red Lake District, which had started on previous days, also were called “out” yesterday.

Meanwhile, two new fires were reported in Thunder Bay District on Saturday.

Both of those are now “out.”

This leaves five active fires in the region, including a pair located about 15 and 17 km north and northwest of Dryden, respectively.

The others are located in Pikangikum and southwest of Deer Lake in Red Lake District, as well as about 10 km west of Geraldton in Nipigon District.

No problems are anticipated with these fires.

The forest fire hazard is forecast to be “moderate” and “high,” with some areas tipping up into the “extreme” range.

No rain expected until mid-week and aggressive fire behaviour is predicted under these conditions.

There have been 74 fires in the region since April 1, burning 69.6 hectares in total.
