Explosion rocks Wabigoon store

Fireworks are being blamed for an explosion Friday around 2 p.m. at Frank’s Cash and Carry on Highway 17 in Wabigoon.
A box of fireworks was being re-packaged in the garbage portion of the store when the explosion occurred, police said, ripping a hole in the west wall of the building and buckling the front portion of the garage.
One individual was treated and released from the Dryden Regional Health Centre after receiving minor injuries from the blast, police added.
As a precautionary measure, large-vehicle traffic on Highway 17 was re-routed around the scene until it was determined no further explosions would occur.
The Dryden Fire Department, the Wabigoon Volunteer Fire Department, and the Dryden Police Service assisted at the scene.
The OPP Explosive Disposal Unit assisted in the investigation and, although the exact cause of the explosion could not be determined, it has been surmised it resulted from a static charge reacting with the fireworks.
This matter remains under investigation by Dryden OPP.
