Pay for mayor, council outlined

An annual report issued in accordance with the Municipal Act shows how much the mayor and councillors were paid in 2011, with Mayor Roy Avis ranking as the highest-paid and having the most expenses.

Mayor Avis, who also sits on the Fort Frances Power Corp. board of directors and local Police Services Board, had expenses and remuneration totalling $38,800.

This total consists of a base salary of $23,000.12, plus $3,300 in per diems, $1,850 for being on the Police Services Board, $4,802.20 for being on the FFPC board, and $5,847.68 for conference expenses.

Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft ranked second, having total expenses and remuneration equal to $19,556.06.

This breaks down to a base salary of $12,000.04, plus $2,175 in per diems, $1,850 for serving on the Police Services Board, and $3,528.02 for conference expenses.

Coun. Paul Ryan had total expenses and remuneration equal to $17,366.26 (base salary of $12,000.04, $2,025 in per diems, and $3,341.22 for conference expenses).

Coun. John Albanese had total expenses and remuneration equal to $16,410.96 (base salary of $12,004.04, $1,875 in per diems, and $2,535.92 for conference expenses).

Coun. Andrew Hallikas had total expenses and remuneration equal to $16,147.46 (base salary of $12,004.04, $1,950 in per diems, and $2,197.42 for conference expenses).

Coun. Sharon Tibbs had total expenses and remuneration equal to $13,799.98 (base salary of $13,499.98 and $300 in per diems).

Coun. Tibbs’ salary is slightly higher than the other councillors because she also serves as deputy mayor.

Finally, Coun. Ken Perry had total expenses and remuneration equal to $13,090, with a base salary of $11,538.50, $900 in per diems, and $651.90 for conference expenses. (Note: The base salary is slightly lower than others because Coun. Perry was shorted $461.54 in error on one payment in 2011. The town has paid him the amount due this year and that will show up in the 2012 reporting year.)

On average, expenses and remuneration for mayor and council were only slightly higher in 2011 than 2010, mainly due to the increase to their base salary in 2011.

In 2010, the mayor’s base salary was $22,3274.20 while that of council was $10,621.96.

As well, while some councillors had more conference expenses than in 2010, others had less.

This was due to the fact councillors take turns as to who attends which conference.
