The winners of Ontario’s fifth-annual Secondary School Business Plan Competition were announced Saturday during simultaneous ceremonies in North Bay, Cornwall, Burlington, and London.

Brandon Olson of Emo was crowned the regional winner from Northern Ontario as well as the first runner-up in the provincial competition, earning $2,000.

Olson’s proposed business venture, “The Crazy Corn Maze,” involves operating an activity/entertainment centre and refreshment site that consists of a corn maze and a canteen, called the “Yellow Fellow.”

The proposed “Crazy Corn Maze” would provide residents of Rainy River District and tourists with quality entertainment, fun-filled, interactive activities, and a broad selection of canteen items.

Participating in the Northwest Business Plan Contest is the ultimate business experience for high school students, noted Carmela Laffin of the Northwest Business Centre.

“To further promote entrepreneurship, we feel it is important to create strategic alliances with the entrepreneurs of tomorrow—the high school students of today,” Laffin added.

Participating in the Northwest Business Plan Contest or Summer Company is the ultimate business experience for high school students, Laffin explained.

It’s life as an entrepreneur, but in a risk-free environment.

Students are given the chance to research, develop, implement, and evaluate entrepreneurial projects within their own community.

The business plan contest provides students with additional skills training in entrepreneurship and community leadership.

Students also have the opportunity to implement their business plan through Ontario’s Summer Company program, which is now open for applications.

Planning for the 2007 Northwest Business Plan Contest is well underway. Interested youth can contact Laffin toll-free at 1-866-336-7779.

The Northwest Business Centre is dedicated to teaching young people about the principles of business, and strives to provide them with the practical skills, knowledge, and entrepreneurial spirit needed to succeed in today’s business world.
