Sacred Heart School in Sioux Lookout is offering a native language course for the first time.
Funding of $24,789 has been secured to develop a student mentorship program between aboriginal students at Sacred Heart and those at St. Francis and St. Michael’s in Fort Frances.
The new students will benefit directly from the sharing of experiences, and will understand how the languages program will build cultural identity and acceptance among other cultures.
Students and staff are excited about the interaction that will take place.
Native Awareness Days at St. Michael’s, St. Francis, and Our Lady of the Way are designed to increase knowledge and awareness among all students.
A student outreach program had native language students taking an active role in Remembrance Day activities at Couchiching First Nation.
The objective of these projects is to increase student achievement among all aboriginal students, as well as to foster closer ties with the aboriginal community.
