Kim Jo Bliss - Moo's From The Herd

Early trials looking good

Well, it was wonderful busy time here in Rainy River District last week.
We didn’t have much rain, but enough to keep us off the land for a few days at the agricultural research station in Emo.
The earlier planted trials all have emerged and are looking good. We are now working on finishing off some other areas of EARS, and by the end of the week it should be safe to plant our soybeans.

Busy week at ag station

My summer students had a very busy week at the Emo Agricultural Research Station, getting lots of seeds weighed, packaged, and in the ground.
We actually worked on some of the more time-consuming trials that have been ongoing for a few years. It is nice to get them off the list as they take up a fair amount of time even though they are not big trials.

Weather thankfully didn’t dampen cattle sale

Well, Mother Nature co-operated for part of Spring Fever Days in Emo!
Friday was beautiful and it was nice to see our little town buzzing along.

Sad to see my boss go

This is what happens when we have summer-like weather in March–we pay for it with snow and miserable weather.
Mind you, we only had a light dusting of snow at my place but Fort Frances saw a couple of inches.
Nice to see the sun out again and I’m hoping for some warmer temperatures soon!

Lots of work ahead at ag station

The Emo Agricultural Research Station is officially open for the 2012 season.
I’ve been working on files, trial plans, and organizing, with seed to be arriving shortly.
Often when I get back to work at EARS, there is still snow on the ground. So I feel like I am behind but it is still early yet. I am shocked how quickly it is drying up but we certainly need some heat.

March definitely went out like lion

It seemed that March wanted to go out like a lion with that miserable dump of snow we saw at the end of last week.
The barnyard had been decent up until that point but now it’s a sloppy mess.

Weather too nice for inside chores

Another summer-like week here in Rainy River District!
I had a big list of inside jobs (i.e., income tax) but I found myself not so interested in being inside. So “Roxee” and I pretty much walked around all our fences and replaced staples and wires as needed.
I was hoping she might be able to find herself a deer shed at the same time, but no luck yet.

Still waiting for the other shoe to drop

Wow, how about this weather? It was all I could do to not drag out the summer furniture.
But even though I’m not as bad as my mother or my brother, my superstitious ways tell me that I will totally jinx myself!

Spring weather sure has arrived

Well, spring certainly felt as though it arrived over the weekend and I’m hearing only warmer temperatures are in store for this coming weekend.
Monday’s drizzle certainly made things feel more like spring—icy and messy in the barn yard. But I’m sure those people experiencing water problems are welcoming some wet weather in hopes of getting things flowing again.

Puppy just like having a kid

Have you ever seen the commercials on TV of the cute, adorable puppies running with the toilet paper?
I have one that does that, but I don’t find it so cute in the real world. It is like having a kid—you have to be thinking one step ahead of her all the time.
She really is a pretty good little thing, but every now and then she has to remind us that she is just a puppy.
