Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services Inc. is a corporation that provides
health care, mental health and addiction treatment services to the 10
First Nations.
Position Summary:
The Public Health Nurse will act under the professional supervision of the
Manager of Health Services. The Public Health Nurse is to coordinate and
oversee all aspects of the community clients; to provide essential health
support to clients and community members through the promotion and
maintenance of the health of individuals, family groups, communities and
populations that value the principles of primary health care and focus on
promoting health. The Public Nurse will act as a resource and advocate for
all to promote the values, goals, and philosophy of FFTAHS.
Job Duties:

  • Utilize leadership skills to identify problems and problem solve in the

Community Health program;

  • Liaise with other health care professionals and maintain good

relationships with Medical/Support/Family/Agency and general public,
and refer to appropriate agencies and service providers to enhance the
health of individuals, family groups and populations;

  • Teach, supervise and counsel the client and family members and other

members of the health care team, regarding the nursing care needs and
other related problems of the client;

  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments as indicated within

the Scope of Practice outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario;

  • Advocates for public policy and services that promote, and protect the

health and well-being of individuals, families, groups and communities;

  • Participate in the planning and conduct of the Community Health

Program promotional efforts, of primary health care, strategies for health
promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, curative,
urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation and support of palliative care;

  • Assist in the preparation of Program reports and planning documents;
  • Work collaboratively as an integral part of the client care team and be

able to seek consultation when the situation demands nursing expertise
beyond their competence;

  • Have an understanding of cultural norms, protocols, and diversities of

the people FFTAHS services.

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a Canadian university

or recognized equivalent or a Diploma in Nursing from a Canadian
or Canadian recognized institution with a diploma or certificate in
Community Health Nursing;

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and

no restrictions;

  • Solid knowledge of health care related legislation and practices;
  • Ability to work independently and provide leadership to the health

care team;

  • Demonstrates a commitment to personal and client safety;
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate or willing to train;
  • Minimum of 1 year current experience in general nursing;
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of community health nursing;
  • Knowledge of common, acute, chronic and emergency conditions
  • Willing to take additional training;
  • Have the ability to work effectively with First Nation community

members and leadership;

  • Have the ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions;
  • Have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious working

relationships with other employees and the public;

  • Have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Anishinaabemowin – Ability to communicate effectively in Ojibway a

definite asset;

  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, practices and norms or an openness

and willing to learn;

  • The successful applicant must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable

Sector Criminal Records Check.
