FAMILY COUNSELLOR
(Full-time)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Onigaming is currently seeking to hire a full time Family Counsellor
to fill a 6 to 12 month maternity leave position. The Family Counsellor
is responsible for the Assessment of family functioning and provision
of clinical counselling services to children and adolescents and other
family members, including the family as a unit. Under the direction of
the Community Care Supervisor, the Family Counsellor provides case
management support to the team in the investigation and assessment of
family cases where children are at risk of abuse.
The Family Counsellor will foster cultural awareness through active
participation in an inductive learning process, gaining an understanding
of historical trauma and impacts of oppression and how these relate to
current issues in Native child welfare. The Family Counsellor will develop
culturally competent practice skills that are congruent to the unique needs
of Ojibways of Onigaming.
DUTIES:

  • Provides case management support to the team, in the investigation

and assessment of family cases where children are at risk;

  • Provides family counselling to children, adolescent and other family

members, following referrals from the team to assist in areas of
self-esteem, coping and relations and functioning ensuring protection,
supervision and development of the children;

  • To be able to provide a bicultural healing approach for clientele

as requested;

  • Prepares investigation and assessment report; completes case notes

and other case-related documentation regularly for inclusion in the
master file; prepare monthly statistical reports to program and case
activity, and reports regarding family counselling services to Community
Care Supervisor as a requested;

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Community Care Supervisor;
  • Sensitivity to community Traditions, Customs and Values;
  • Proficient in Trauma Response and Counselling.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant training and 2-3 years experience in individual, group and

family counselling;

  • Knowledge of systems of theory and its application of families;
  • Drug & Alcohol free for a period of at least two years; Social Work or

other related field please provide necessary documents;

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited university or in

a related field with training in individual and family counselling;

  • Working knowledge of Onigaming Customary Care Resource Team

and Weechi-it-te-win’s service delivery system and the policy
and procedures;

  • Experience in assessing client and family problems and needs, and in

preparing family assessment reports and social histories;

  • Knowledge and experience in traditional and contemporary healing

practices Including experience in working with Elders , healers and
clinicians;

  • Experience in and/or commitment to the development of alternative,

non-punitive, healing approaches that are derived from traditional
Anishinaabe culture; Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act
and Regulations;

  • Experience in conducting community workshop;
  • Knowledge of the administrative structure and operations of OCCRT

and family structure, as well as the Anishinaabe customs, traditions
and protocols;

  • An understanding and appreciation of Ojibways of Onigaming

Anishinaabe cultural, beliefs, values, norms, ceremony, teaching and a
commitment to continue learning participating and advocating during
any opportunity provided by Onigaming;

  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and Regulations;
  • Ability to speak Ojibway is an asset;
  • Own vehicle and Valid Driver’s license. Class G and be able to submit

drivers abstract;

  • Criminal Check to be included or current Vulnerable Sector Check.

SALARY: Negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
