Waasodii Omii’e Counsellor – 1.0 FTE
Preamble
Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services Inc. is a corporation that
provides health care, mental health and addiction treatment services
to the 10 First Nations.
Position Summary
The Waasodii Omii’e Counsellor is responsible for working closely
with the Waasodii Omii’e Coordinator to carry out Traditional
seasonal and land based prevention and intervention programming
of the Waasodii Omii’e program. The Waasodii Omii’e Counsellor
will ensure all program goals, outcomes and activities are carried out
in accordance with the program model and intent of this Indigenous
Mental Wellness Program. The Waasodii Omii’e Counsellor
will provide individual, group based, and community wellness/
counselling programming that is within an Anishinaabe traditional
healing paradigm and have available counselling services in our
Anishinaabe language and be available for Anishinaabe language
translation.
Job Duties

  • Works within a holistic model to provide assistance to the

Waasodii Omii’e Coordinator in providing Traditional teachings,
ceremonies, and knowledge/wisdom transfer to Tribal and
Community Service providers, individuals, families, groups, and
communities

  • Assists in the Planning, coordinating, and carrying out of seasonal

land based activities for youth, families, adults, Elders, service
providers, and communities

  • Provides a minimum of 2 community based circles/clinics/

ceremonies or other mental health and addiction healing
methodology per month in community

  • Works with the Behavioural Health Services team of FFTAHS

to ensure wrap around services to youth, adults, families, and
communities to promote wellness through prevention and
intervention services rooted in our cultural methodologies

  • Assists other service providers in building culturally safe

practice bundles for utilization in mental health and addictions
services

  • Ensures teachings such as rites of passage, healing ceremonies,

and inductive land based learning is used as a primary way of
intervention.

  • Works closely with the Waasodii Omii’e Coordinator to plan for

individual, family, community, or group based healing within the
context of Traditional practices and Anishinaabemowin

  • Keeps accurate records of participation, service provider

attendance, and informal assessment of success of program

  • Works with FFTAHS Elder’s committee to gather and record

recommendations for each of their communities to empower
traditional knowledge transfer as an intervention to social
determinants of health
Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Social Work preferred
  • Have the ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her

actions.

  • Have the ability to work effectively with referring agents, clients

and the general public;

  • Have the ability to manage time well and multi-task under stressful

conditions with an even temperament;

  • Must be proficient in word processing and computer usage

experience or have the willingness to learn computer applications
and usage. Training will be provided;

  • Anishinaabemowin – Ability to communicate effectively in

Anishinaabemowin is preferred.

  • Have the ability to understand and follow oral and written

instructions; and is well organized.

  • First Aid/CPR;
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s “G” License, have a good

driving record and be insurable.

  • Must successfully pass a Criminal Reference Check.
  • Experience working with First Nations people in a First Nation

community and/or First Nation organization.
