Members of the Rainy River District Community Policing Committee, including John Beaton, Jessica Barker, Crystal Lambertson, Elaine Fischer, John Young, Bonnie Bender, and OPP Cst. Anne McCoy, showed off the new mobile radar sign they purchased thanks to a grant from Safe Kids Canada. Motorists can expect to see the sign in town, and elsewhere in the district, to raise awareness of speeding.

Former NHL star Theoren Fleury presented his speech, “Don’t Quit Before the Miracle,” to local residents at the Townshend Theatre last night. Fleury focused on his recovery from sexual abuse as a child and his ability to bounce back from drug and alcohol abuse as an adult. He also signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans afterwards.

Brian Rich held former WWE wrestler “Bushwhacker Luke” against the ropes in Canadian Wrestling’s Elite action at the Couchiching recreation centre Tuesday night. The evening featured a total of six matches, culminating with the main event between “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn, also a former WWE competitor, and “Canadian Crazyhorse” Michael Elgin.

Missy Smith held up the matching traditional skirts sewn yesterday during the “Strengthen and Inspire the Anishinaabekwe” conference held at the East End Hall here Tuesday and Wednesday. The two-day conference was organized and run by the women enrolled in the Seven Generation’s Education Institute’s Azhemiinagoziwin program, and also marked International Women’s Day (March 8).

The Lakers held off the K&A Wolverines 2-1 in Thunder Bay last night to grab a 3-2 lead in their first-round best-of-seven series.
Fort Frances can advance to the SIJHL semi-finals with a win in Game 6 here tonight starting at 7:30 p.m.
A loss would set up a winner-take-all Game 7 on Sunday afternoon back in the Lakehead.
