    Local firefighter Rod Davis showed Megan Perreault, her son, Morgan, and daughter, Myla, some of the features of the Fort Frances Fire Department’s new pumper truck Saturday morning at Canadian Tire. Firefighters were there to promote Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 5-11.

    Capt. Angel Sandoval of the Salvation Army pointed out how empty the shelves were Friday afternoon at the Citadel’s food bank. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, local residents are being asked to help the less fortunate and donate non-perishable food items. In related news, the public is invited to drop by the Citadel (316 Victoria Ave.) this Friday (Oct. 10) between noon-1:30 p.m. for a Thanksgiving lunch. Because space is limited, it will be a “first-come, first-served” gathering. Anyone who would like to help serve or cook can call the Salvation Army at 274-3871.

    “Victim” Laura Chabot was loaded into the ambulance after her vehicle was struck by a car full of high school students while they were racing their friends. Michelle Grynol and her “baby” (background) also were on board. It all was part of a mock accident set up at the railroad crossing on McIrvine Road organized by the OPP and Ministry of Transportation. The entire event was videotaped and will be shown across the district to educate drivers on Bill 203, which brought in higher fines for aggressive drivers, as well as to create awareness of the dangers of driving aggressively.

    The Fort Frances Times was awarded the “Ambassador for Safety Business Award” by Safe Communities Canada, which was established to recognize organizations that make an exceptional contribution to improving safety in their communities. It was presented last Thursday morning by Fort Frances Fire Chief Gerry Armstrong and Grace Silander, with the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition, to Times’ co-owners Jim Cumming, Don Cumming, and Linda Plumridge.

    Muskie Dan Brunetta (#23) looked to make the tackle with a blocking Marauder all over him as Mason McKay (#40) converged to help snuff out the play. The Muskies held Maples’ running game in check all afternoon last Thursday at Muskie Field en route to a 22-14 victory that evened their WHSFL record at 2-2.
