Health care professionals and other invited guests gathered to meet Dr. Saliba, who officially started the job yesterday. Dr. Saliba has moved here from Thunder Bay with her husband, Dave Van Dyk. o

    Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) students Jaqueline Edwards, left, and Brienne Lowey-Bodkin received gift baskets to help welcome them to Fort Frances last night during a meet and greet at Little Beaver Cultural Centre. The third-year students will be working with local health-care professionals for the next 30 weeks to complete their comprehensive community clerkship year.

    Fort Frances Lakers’ goaltender Tyler Ampe kept an eagle eye on action behind his net as the Lakers battled the host Dryden Ice Dogs in the SIJHL preseason opener for both teams last night. Ampe made 21 saves en route to picking up his first win, a 6-5 overtime decision, with the team.

William and Shirley Cressey of Rainy River won a trip to New York valued at $2,600. Next month’s trip is to Jamaica ($4,600).

Ryan to run for council

Coun. Paul Ryan filed his nomination papers to run in the upcoming municipal fall election yesterday, meaning that all of the incumbents will have their names on the ballot come Oct. 25.

Lakers earn OT win

The Fort Frances Lakers’ preseason slate got off to a promising start in Dryden last night.
The Lakers came back on the Ice Dogs twice, first from a 2-0 first-period deficit and then from a 5-4 last-minute one, to sink the Dryden Ice Dogs 6-5 in overtime.
