Whether or not students will be attending Robert Moore School here this September—or a school by another name—is set to be decided at the Rainy River District School Board’s monthly meeting tonight.
Two suggestions have been put forward by the naming committee for the school currently being built to consolidate students from Robert Moore and F.H. Huffman under one roof.

The first recommendation from the committee is that the Robert Moore name be transferred over to the new school.
Twenty-one out of the 40 submissions received by the committee from the public favoured this option.
The other name being put forward by the committee is “East End Waabanong Elementary School”—selected because it “represents the entire population of the school and flows well.”
The committee also is suggesting that the board consider naming one or more “distinctive parts of the new school” after the two current schools, such as the primary wing, junior/intermediate wing, gym, or library.
As per board policy, when it comes to an amalgamation of schools (in this case Robert Moore and F.H. Huffman), a naming committee was formed and collected name suggestions for the new facility from the public from October until the end of January.
From all the suggestions, the committee then narrowed down the choices to the ones it is presenting to the board tonight.
Sitting on the naming committee for the new school were John Bagacki (community member), Dan Belluz (board chair), Karen Peltomaki (F.H. Huffman teacher), Caroline Spencer (Robert Moore school council chair), and Dianne Thompson (Robert Moore principal), with Superintendent of Education Heather Campbell acting as a staff resource for the committee.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which will be held at Donald Young School in Emo starting at 7 p.m., the board will be addressing trustee distribution for the upcoming election.
For example, given Mine Centre School amalgamated with the public board back in September, 2008, trustees will be looking at where the Mine Centre unorganized area should be attached to for voting.
In other words, whether it should be represented by the two trustees (at large) who represent the Town of Fort Frances and unorganized areas east of Fort Frances, or the trustee representing the Township of Atikokan and unorganized areas there.
The board also will be presenting a recognition of excellence to Donald Young School for its production last week of “Beauty and the Beast.”
